Attention IT Experts; I Have Questions

There is a weird idea rolling around in my head. Before I share it, I wanted to ask any IT experts a few questions.

What is the possibility of a site such as youtube being hacked and shutdown? Could the site be shutdown indefinitely or could it be returned to operation quickly with minimum damage to the site's content?

What about the entire worldwide internet system? Is it linked in a way that a sophisticated hacker could tamper with all of the internet and create a blackout?

I believe all the answers would be YES. If they can put a man on the moon then I think someone out there has the tech knowledge to shut down the entire internet...worldwide.

Why do you ask about youtube? There has been some strange things going on there lately...

The weird idea has been inspired by a couple of things.

First, yesterday was HG Wells birthday. He is the author of War of the Worlds. Orson Welles became famous as the narrarator of the 1938 War of the World radio broadcast. That broadcast successfully manipulated the popular form of communication of that time...radio...to create mass hysteria surrounding a fictitious event. Radio is a medium that relies on sound. Listeners could never see so they relied on studio manufactured sounds to create illusions. During regular radio broadcasts, telling listeners that a car was driving down a street meant nothing to listeners unless they heard the car engine and horn. The manipulation of sounds and good acting by nararator Orson Welles convinced listeners that aliens had landed and that the world was coming to an end. The hoax was controversial but most importantly...it made jaws drop and still does many decades later.

Second, the number of youtube videos since MJ's death has exploded. Everyone is creating MJ youtube channels with all sorts of videos. Some are mere tribute videos whlle many others address his death or faked death. So many members of MJHD and this site have noticed videos that appear and later disappear with no explaination. People have reportedly hacked into some MJ video channels and altered videos or outright removed them. These could just be mean-spirited pranksters doing the hacking. This proves that someone can get into youtube and manipulate the video content.

The internet is the popular communication medium of our time. People spend many hours online commuincating with a global audience. What is the likeliihood that the entire internet system could be used within the hoax?. I'm not simply just saying emails sent to hoax sites. I'm thinking along the lines of the internet being hacked with a total blackout except for youtube. Could youtube being used as the only site available to communicate manipulative message via videos? The hacker would have a captive worldwide audience. Mass hysteria would take place. All eyes would be on youtube and viewers would be awaiting for the next videos. Those videos are created by the hackers and would climb inside the head of viewers with their mind-blowing manipultive messages. All other forms of media would be focused 24/7 on the youtube video messages so the hacker could talk to the world...especially the media.

What messages? I dunno. MJ hoax related? Yes. Think about it for a moment. Jaws would drop for decades to come.

Possible, but only if the person is very highly experienced in coding and breaking firewalls and other tight security. Even then, the person or person(s) would be tracked via their IP address and made a severe example of.eg: anyone who succesfully hacked sites such as google, youtube, facebook, ebay (big name sites) would be tracked and arrested within a matter of hours.

No-one would need shut down other sites anyway as youtube is the accepted main forum for all media. It is used by 80% of consumers to upload their wmv files and is way ahead of google, yahoo or other sites sucvh as break.com

LOL...my weird idea didn't take sophisticated tracking methods into consideration.

Back to War of the Worlds...since that is my comparison. The listeners and even law enforcement was blind-sided and so caught up in the hysteria that they never suspected a hoax. They didn't exactly go to the station,peek into the studio and check on the nararator...lol. Orson Welles uses a news description format to deliver the broadcast. The broadcast started with the statement...We interrupt this program......" That statement immediately provided credibility to the hoax. Plus all sorts of fictious unnamed government officials were calling in to add to the hoax credibility.

Oh well...as noted... it was a weird thougt that probably could not occur...
