What do you do for a living?
Hi everyone.
I'm having a crisis right now.
I'm soon to be 19 in a couple of weeks, and I'm feeling really stressed about my plan as far as a career goes. I know everyone says that you don't have to know now - but I want to. I need to.
I'm currently in school (my first semester) and at first I liked it, but now having all of this work I just think to myself.. Is this really what I want to do? I mean you get so many assignments and I think to myself.. When will I ever need to use this? I'm just feeling so overwhelmed right now.
I don't want to keep paying for school (seeing as how expensive it is) only to not end up doing anything with it.
I'm interested in just hearing what some of you do for a living.
Anything would help at this point.

Re: What do you do for a living?
I start a new job on Monday working for the government but I have had lots of jobs! I used to work for the Immigration Service, for a debt management charity, I was also a legal secretary for a big law firm and an administrator for a small finance company.
I get bored to easily and have to move on all the time because I haven't found my dream job yet. I am a singer and this is all I want to do but I doubt that will ever happen so like you I am stuck.
I don't think anyone can tell you what job to do. You have to want to do it and it needs to come from your heart and be something you love

Well I guess it's just that I think financially as well.
One day down the line I want to have a family - which requires money.
I just want to make sure I'm comfortable in the income sense.

Well, if you are thinking financially... Don't go into teaching!!! It's incredibly underpaid and the burn-out rate is really high.

Re: What do you do for a living?
Ohh wow...I remember my career decison crisis at nineteen...those were the days. I am still in a crisis! HA-Rach you are younger then me right-sounds like you have had some cool jobs.
I went to college for like two semesters after my divorce. I have worked as a barista at a coffee shop. I have been an assistant manager at a fast food wanna be coffee shop(I really like my coffee). I have worked a hell job at a factory. The best job I ever had was in Ohio at Country Club....lots of fancy people from all over the world. Great pay and it was easy. I got to bartend there as well. It made me actualy want to be a professional bartender-even though I DO NOT DRINK. Now I am back in Alabama working as an assistant to the stock supervisor of a grocery store....one day I will figure my life out.
I love to write and I love music...all I want is to get out of debt (credit and student loan) and just live and be happy. I will tell you this-you don't have to know RIGHt NOW. Sure you do not want to be like me-27 and still not have a career-but life is about growing and learning. I have seen many people rush and stress when they are straight out of highschool and change majors 4 or 5 times. Don't let others dictate your life for you and if you need to take a break do it. JUST don't get married to escape it and don't get into debt-LOL. I could have enjoyed the paast few years had I NOT DONE THAT. Just live-be happy. Make plans but make sure you are at peace in your heart with them. Don't make a career decision soley for money. I went to college in Ohio and got a Pastoral Leadership Diploma. I am not gonna open a church any time soon but I learned alot and I love learning...so this probably did not help you in the least. Sorry.

Re: What do you do for a living?
I feel your pain! Before I graduated college I had 4 majors. It's hard sometimes to know what you want to do when you are just out of high school. I work in television production. I love it and have always wanted to do it but it was a rough road getting there. I was 25 when I graduated and I don't regret taking some extra time to figure out what I wanted. Take some time off from school if you feel you need it. Good luck and follow your heart. It will lead you in the right direction always!

Re: What do you do for a living?
Freelance marketing professional.
Talk to someone who is actually doing the job that you seek. It is a great way to learn the ups and downs before you commit yourself to study for one job and only to end up changing because it is different than what you thought it to be.
Talk to a couple people: one who has worked in that field for under 5 years and then perhaps another who has worked that job for 10-15 years. You will get a great perspective from both. Also if your schedule permits, find out if you can shadow someone and see what a typical work day might be for that person.
Consider finances but do not chase a paycheck. Choose a field that you truly have a passion for. In the past, I had a few jobs that paid very well and I hated to wake up in the morning on a work day.

Re: What do you do for a living?
Wow, what a wide cross section of careers! I agree that you should take your time to figure out what you'd like to do. I still had no idea even once I finished university, and even though I didn't exactly end up using my degree, I won't ever think it was a waste of time or money. All I can say is find something you think you'll enjoy, where your passion lies, and hopefully the money part will follow. Of course you'll need to be a tiny bit realistic too. I don't want to say exactly what I do, other than tell you I run my own business, just because this forum isn't private and anyone can google stuff and see our posts. I don't want my clients to think I've gone around the bend.

I love your last comment.
Wouldn't it be funny if one of your clients is actually a member of this forum too? I've often wondered if I will eventually bump into someone that I really know.

I know I already contributed to this thread, but my first day of work in my new job is finally over! It feels like I have been waiting forever to start and I had a great day but I am exhausted It's 7.30pm and I am ready to crawl into bed!
The only down side is now I won't have as much time to spend on the forum which is a shame but I guess that's what weekends are for

Re: What do you do for a living?
i got my degree in psychology (and also took a lot of criminal justice classes before i switched to psychology), since i'm interested in counseling. BUT, i haven't used my degree whatsoever and i honestly don't think i will (a counseling job will require a master's degree). if anything, i will go into graphic design since i'm an artist. for the meantime, i am not working...i'm simply a housewife
but whatever you decide to do, make sure it's something you can at least halfway enjoy. for me, i CANNOT work at a place i don't like, or with people i don't like. i've done it before in college. i just can't. the only way i can be content, happy and comfortable in the workplace is if i'm self employed, lol...seriously.

Hi everybody,
I've been reading each one of your posts for months. You're just incredible : you're doing a great job ! You give me hope, you make me smile, you make me feel understood. I'm so grateful for that.
Just 2 words to introduce myself : I'm half french, half portuguese, married, 39 years old, 2 WONDERFUL daughters (7 and 10) and I love Michael for almost 30 years now...time flies!!!
I'm a sales rep in pharma industry. Nice job as I work for a little company (compared to huge groups) interested in developping therapies in different fields such as rare diseases affecting children.
I miss Michael so much, but keep the faith!!!
I know he's not gone... and I'm happy I found you
